What are some good resources for learning ABOUT the Bible?

They give precisely the kind of information you’re talking about in the book introductions, without being overly lengthy. There’s also good essays about canonical development (how each ’section’ of scripture came to be regarded as authoritative and why particular books were included and others excluded.) For info strictly about the Old Testament or Hebrew Bible the NJPS Jewish Study Bible is so good I can’t even begin to tell you.
Beyond the study Bibles, Asimov’s Guide to the Bible is a pretty good historical reference with very little interpretation offered, but it doesn’t touch much upon canon development.
Those are some of the things I use.
Peace to you.
